Before the remake of the game arrived, the game had pirated versions that contained some effects like Tom with a bizarre voice. However, formerly this version was for those who could not afford to buy the full version for $0.99. Talking Tom Cat Free is a separate app, but it has the same features to the original app, the only thing changed is the icon, and it has micro transactions. There is an unused sound on the original app called "angry.wav", which sounded like this is the typical cat sound that you can hear in movies, animations and apps. On the older versions for the Android version such as the 1.0 version, unlike the iOS version, the app's sprite sheets and sounds can be found in the game's files. The app saw an online presence in mid 2021 on YouTube and TikTok with the original version of Tom saying “Boy what the hell boy” who had become a meme. This was the first Outfit7 game to have anti-piracy. In the new version, Ben has a slight cameo as his hand when Tom gets hungry. This might have been intended for when you press Tom's tail in the old version, it was probably not used for being a little scary. There is unused audio of an angry cat meowing. The original version needed 4 head pokes to make Tom fall, but the remake only needs 3. A similar transition was used in Talking Pierre the Parrot later on. The 2010 version of Talking Tom Cat was supposed to feature a smooth transition between standing and listening, although Outfit7 presumably decided not to add it as it would get tiring having to watch the small animation. You can still see the original Talking Tom on the pillow in Talking Tom Cat 2. The model for the alleyway also appears to have been purchased from TurboSquid, as the original model can be located on the website here. 
Tom's original model in the app was originally bought from TurboSquid for $90. Though some believe it could have also been to remove references to apps prior to 2014. It's unknown why this game got an overhaul in 2016, although fans usually agree it was because the old model looked uncanny and outdated. Despite this, the button icon still has the original Talking Tom and The Pillow. Talking Tom Cat appeared in Talking Tom Cat 2 as a phone but was later replaced with My Talking Tom in 2013. Originally this app cost $0.99 on Google Play Store. 
Before the remake, if you install the recent version of the paid version, the game will warn you that it will no longer update and will force you to install the free version.
This game inspired many more Talking Apps, even ones not from Outfit7, such as Talking Carl. In 2016, a remake of Talking Tom Cat was released, and most features were removed.
